Student’s First Teacher
You would think that an organization whose mission is “to advocate for education professionals and to unite our members and the nation to fulfill the promise of public education to prepare every student to succeed in a diverse and interdependent world” would want success for every person, including the unborn because, after all, they too will be students one day. In fact, they are students as they begin learning the voice of their caretakers from inside the mother’s womb.
As Jaclyn Stewart points out in an article, “Studies show that even in the womb, your baby is listening. If you talk to your baby frequently during your pregnancy, or even just talk a lot in general, your baby will be able to recognize the sound of your voice when he[/she] his born. This is an important first step in the learning process
It is admirable for an organization to provide a “public education to prepare every student to succeed” only if it applies to ALL students.
Georgia Right to Life, in cooperation with other pro-life groups, is organizing a protest at this year’s NEA Convention in Atlanta, GA at the Georgia World Congress Center on July 1, 2013 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. The NEA Convention is June 26-July 6, 2013 with some 16,000 members expected to attend. Your help and participation is needed to show support for the youngest of students, the student learning from what should be the safest schools of all, free from violence; free from discrimination; a smoke free environment; and provided with healthy meals.
Georgia Right to Life points out on their website that,
Lurking beneath this admirable mission, however, lays a deceptive family planning resolution, as follows:
• “The National Education Association supports family planning, including the right to reproductive freedom.
• The Association urges the government to give high priority to making available all methods of family planning to women and men unable to take advantage of private facilities.
• The Association also urges the implementation of community-operated, school-based family planning clinics that will provide intensive counseling by trained personnel.”
At the 1998 NEA Assembly in New Orleans, LA, a first time delegate asked the following 3-part question (from the resolution above) at the microphone:
• Through the words “reproductive freedom” in our Resolutions document, does the NEA support the choice to abort after the first trimester?
Response from the chair: Yes.
• Through the words “reproductive freedom” in our Resolutions document, does the NEA support a woman’s choice to abort after viability?
Response from the chair: Yes.
• Through the words “reproductive freedom” in our Resolutions document, does the NEA support the decision to abort up to, and including delivery, commonly termed by the media a “partial birth abortion?”
Response from the chair: We have NO limitations.
According to their website, their vision is a great public school for every student offering equal opportunity. By equal opportunity they “believe public education is the gateway to opportunity. All students have the human and civil right to a quality public education that develops their potential, independence, and character.” [Emphasis added]
The NEA espouses great sounding rhetoric like “We believe public education is vital to building respect for the worth, dignity, and equality of every individual in our diverse society” while with the other hand committing $60 million for President Obama’s re-election campaign in 2012, the most pro-abortion president in America’s history.
If you live in Atlanta and you believe that ALL students, born and unborn, deserve a quality education, public or private, show your support by coming out to the Georgia World Congress Center July 1 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Stand with other like minded teachers, students, mothers, fathers, clergy, and other pro-lifers to demand that the NEA remain neutral on the issue of abortion. If you can’t come for the full four hours, come when you can. If you can’t come or you don’t live in Atlanta, please spend some time praying for those that will show up and for the NEA, that they will stand for life in addition to education of our children.
